1.0) Introduction:
=======================================================================
Hi there reader, thanks for reading the Video Game Console FAQ. I (Sly)
begin to gather informations of video game consoles for more than 4 years
now. This FAQ will be THE biggest one i have (and will) ever wrote in 3
years. Since this FAQ is loaded with info, i couldn't updated all by
myself, so i proposed to Olivier Boisseau if he would be my co-author on
this FAQ. And since he lives in France (me in Canada), he already posses
a great deal of information about the Europeans Video Game Consoles.
I wanted another co-author, someone who lives in Japan. Since i don't
understand Japanese myself (just a few words), it would have been great
to have this third co-author. Many games and consoles are not know to us
fellow videogamers, well maybe in a near future someone could assist us
with all video game consoles that have came out in Japan & Asia.
Me and Olivier hope that you'll like this FAQ. Send your comments !!
And send any info that is missing from this FAQ, Thanks !!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
How the FAQ works:
------------------
This is how the information is classified:
Name Company Year Continent or Country
------------------------------------------------------------
R-Zone Headgear - Tiger Toys - 1995 - U.S.A & Europe
After we describe the console (color, clone or not, features...)
and if possible we put the specs of the consoles, the accessoires
(if any) and a list of games (cart/tapes/cards/built-in...).
Sometimes you will be refered to a console FAQ for more info, since
some consoles FAQs already exist, we try to put a link for every game
console so you can see what it's like. Any link will be added to the
credit section too. So enough chit-chat, let's move on the good stuff!

Controllers contain a small,self-centering analogue joystick and a
keypad with 15 buttons + 2 extra buttons(internally conected) for
"fire". One set of controllers(black joystick handle) contains hard
plastic keys pressing metal leave feathers down onto a contacted PCB.
The other,similar looking controller set(silver handle) contains soft
plastic keypads pressing down a plastic foil keypad.
The 2 main processors(?) have 40pin cases made of white ceramic(!).
Their brown,square label plates say "CT4291 7807" and "CT4281 7805".
There is also a "7404" logics chip made of the same strange white
ceramic on it.
The games resemble to VCS2600 2KB and 4KB games and are nothing really
great,but some games have unique features. The sound system has a single
squarewave voice with pitch from 30Hz up to 3.9kHz(?),and it contains an
analogue(!) noise generator based on the noise from a transistor with
collector pin not connected.

* Olivetti Envision - Olivetti - 1995 - Italy
-----------------
It was a PC and a Multimedia system and it was an absolute failure...
One of the last Olivetti project made under Ing. De Benedetti propriety
before the company was sold. Basically a PC (Windows 95 was the OS) in
a CDTV-like (or CD-I) box, it was produced in two different versions:
one based on the Inter 486 processor and one based on the Intel Pentium
processor. It can be connected to a TV set (and a VCR and Hi-Fi stereo),
can read Audio CDs, CD-Rom, Kodak Photo CDs and Video CDs, can send
faxes, and is Internet-ready.
Major problems: it was overpriced, badly distributed, not completely
compatible (something common with a Wintel PC, with many software bugs,
not at all expandable and Pentium versions were marketed too late.

* OMNI Entertainment System - Milton Bradley - 1981 - U.S.A.
-------------------------
Made by Milton Bradley. This system was a dead arrival on the market.
The games came in 8-Track tapes format that you inserted in the game
system. Supposely they were at least a dozen games made. Users select
various answers via their touch pads, and then the score is racked up.
Obviously giving the linear nature of cassette tapes, the replay value
of the Omni is certainly limited to say the least.
Games:
* Jeopardy! (1981)
* Password Plus (1981)
* Pat Sommerall's Sports Quiz (1981)
* Sesame Street (1981)

* Tandy V.I.S. - Tandy(Radio Shack) - 1992 - U.S.A.
------------
Tandy's Video Information System was launched in the US in November
1992. It uses a modular windows operating system, based on Windows
3.1. Players cost $700, with discs around $30-80.
The Tandy VIS is one more 'black box' illustrating the convergence of
computing and television. It offers users the opportunity to interact
with all the media types, thereby claiming to be a multimedia machine
for home entertainment. Aimed principally at the US home market, Tandy
placed great emphasis on the VIS's interactive capability in their
marketing strategy. Unfortunately the fish didn't bite.
The Tandy VIS actually trades under the name of the Memorex MD 2500
Video Information System. Its technical features are:
System:
CPU: Intel 386
Dimensions: (Height) 9.4 x (Width) 37.8 x (Depth) 34.3 cm
Weight: 5.44 kg
Operating Temp: 10°F to 95°F
Operating Humidity: 20% to 80% non-condensing
Power Requirement: 120 VAC
Power Consumption: 40 watts max
Usable Discs: VIS or CD
The VIS utilises a wireless hand controller for human-computer
interaction. The hand controller provides full control over the VIS,
whether or not the machine is playing an audio CD or a VIS CD. An
additional feature of the VIS is its capability to save information on
a 'Save-It-Cartridge', this can perform a number of functions. For
example it can remember particular tracks of audio CDs so that the next
time that CD is inserted only those tracks are selected, additionally
it can be used by VIS CDs to store information, such as game position or
performance etc. If you own a Super VHS video, the VIS offers S-VHS
output, for direct connection. In addition the VIS offers separate
audio output offering stereo sound capability.
There are many titles available for the VIS, mostly educational in
nature, though games are increasingly appearing for this platform. It
has however never been a large success even in its own domestic market.
US consumers never reacted to the VIS. This may be due to lack of general
appreciation of what it could do, or simply saturation of the US market
Whichever, the VIS has not merited ongoing development by Tandy.

* Ultravision Arcade System - Ultravision - 1983 - U.S.A.
-------------------------
PROTOTYPE:Sometimes referred to as "Video Arcade System" was actually a
television, a videogame unit, and a computer. The eighty-four channel
color television was to have a ten inch diagonal screen and input/output
jacks to allow hook ups with a video recorder and camera.
The basic videogame component accepts only Ultravision's own line of
cartridges. But the owner was to have the option of purchasing two
add-on modules seperately, one that will allow him/her to play
Colecovision games on the Ultravision, and the other for games of the
Atari VCS persuasion. The unit was to come complete with two sixteen
position joysticks with top-mounted fire buttons.
The Ultravision computer contained 64K of memory, expandable to
128K. It uses Microsoft Basic with four other languages accessible.
512 characters are displayable and sixteen colors are possible. The
typewriter-style keyboard contained sixty keys, eight programmable
keys, and upper and lower case alphabet set.The optional disk drive
requires either five and a quarter or eight inch floppy disks, both
single side, double density.
The unit was to be compatible with Applesoft and CP/M software. So
the purchaser was to be walking into a ready-made library. In addition
to its own videogames, Ultravision was to release its own line of
computer software. By covering all the bases, Ultravision ultimately
hoped that its system would be the most software-compatible, the most
versatile unit available. Weighing in at under ten pounds, the machine
ran on AC or DC current. A car lighter adapter cord was to be available
so the obsessed user can program in a car or on a boat.
Cartridges Announced for the Ultravision VAS:
* Baseball Top * Karate II
* B-52 Bomber * Quest for the Idol II
* Condor Attack II * Space War
* Dare Devil Driver * Spider Kong II
* Emergency I * Swimming Contest
* Football * Unexpected Dangers
